We have been extremely lucky to have photographed in some beautiful places with some amazing people. After shooting a Greece wedding in 2012, we both participated in a yoga retreat on Santorini. This retreat was led by two teachers, one of which was world renowned yoga instructor Kathryn Budig. Halfway through the week, Kathryn asked us to take a few photos of her around the retreat property. This little photo shoot spurred a friendship steeped in creative collaborations, laughter and copious bottles of wine in places like Maui, Boulder and San Francisco. And little did we know that one year later, we would be there to capture Kathryn’s Maui engagement to the love of her life, Bob.
Kathryn is the kind of person who makes sure every single person in the room is OK. Which is something she shouldn’t worry about because when you’re with KB, as friends call her, you’re laughing at her infectious humor, spontaneous bursting into dance or pouring yourself another glass of rose to talk about plans and ideas for life.
Bob is her perfect counterpart to a T. A salt of the earth kind of guy, he would literally give you the shirt off his back. Tall and tough on the outside yet through and through soft and honest on the inside. He’s an amazing father to his son Foster, who stood by his side with tears in his eyes during the entire ceremony, which we’ll get to below.
These two met in an unlikely way…skydiving. It was Kathryn’s first time and who’s back should she be strapped to? Bob’s. An accomplished sky diver and instructor with thousands of dives under his belt, he literally swept Kathryn off her feet.
Kathryn and Bob’s romance is one that consists of endless adventure, cooking in the kitchen, walking their three dogs and entertaining their growing list of friends. Which brings us to their Charleston wedding, which brought all of these elements together for one magical, awe inspiring weekend of celebration and love. First up, Kathryn and Bob held a laid back rehearsal dinner at the Riverdogs Stadium in Charleston, where KB’s dad is a co-owner of the team. Healthy ball park snacks and home plate shaped cakes were served. A little game of catch went down on the field, and even a jaw dropping Oscar de la Renta mermaid gown couldn’t take the home grown athlete of little Kathryn.
On the morning of the wedding, Kathryn and her girls gathered for a special yoga session led by best friend and yoga teacher Taylor Harkness. While Bob relaxed in their Charleston home with Foster and the dog pack. We have never actually seen two people more relaxed on their wedding day. The plans were laid and now all they had to do was finally tie the knot to their best friend. That’s exactly how a wedding should be and that’s exactly what these two did.
With Kathryn in a blush pink organza Marchesa gown and Bob donning a 3-piece Billy Reid suit with a locally made feathered Brackish bowtie, these two were the picture of elegance as they exchanged vows under a sea of draping live oak trees for their Boone Hall Plantation wedding ceremony.
Their reception in the Cotton Dock was dripping in southern charm and classic, sweeping romance. With flower petals, bistro lights, raw edison bulbs, marquee love lights and vintage mirrors adorning every inch of the barn, guests enjoyed a myriad of food, wine, sweets and merriment. Food was set up in stations that included shrimp and grits, a raw bar with oysters on the half shell, vegetable crudités, charcuterie, flatbreads and of course, a local food truck appearing late to wrap up the night. Custom macarons were flown in by ex-French Laundry pastry chef, Hsing Chen and the three-tiered cake was adorned with metallic gold leaves, arrows and wrapped in eucalyptus and lavender.
Really, no stone was left unturned and all of this beauty cannot go without mentioning the efforts of local wedding planner, Ashley Wenz of Boutique Planning, who meticulously threw this beauty of an event together with Kathryn’s vision at the wheel.
After a quick change to a short Reem Acra gown, Kathryn, Bob and guests got down on the dance floor, enjoyed a late night Charleston food truck and snacked on homemade cookies from Kathryn’s best friend and their wedding officiant Ashley Cebulka. When it was time, the happy couple made the mad dash for their vintage getaway car, completing what can only be described as a truly perfect day and night.
It’s an understatement to say we loved photographing Kathryn and Bob’s wedding. While enjoying a beach barbecue with them and their family the following day, we had to stop, look at each other and smile. At the fact of how lucky we are to not only know this couple and to have been their photographers, but how lucky we are to have them in our lives as friends. Thank you KaBob and CHEERS!
