Jeff and Ambar gave us the opportunity to photograph our first Pakistani wedding, a beautiful colorful celebration, steeped rich in cultural customs and spread over two days. The weekend began with their Mehndi ceremony at the Portland Art Museum and then the following day gave way to a more traditional western wedding at Skamania Lodge in the Columbia River Gorge. It was a weekend full of cultural blending, love and family bonding as we witnessed their two families come together to celebrate Jeff and Ambar.
Friday’s Mehndi ceremony gave us the most colorful part of the festivities with wedding party, family members and even a few guests dressed in traditional Pakistani wedding attire. Some of which Ambar personally selected herself while visiting Pakistan in the months prior. A Mehndi ceremony has a few parts, including a lively musical entrance of the bride by the wedding party, guests taking turns feeding the happy couple treats, giving them well wishes in their new marriage and later in the evening, the groom’s shoes get stolen and he has to pay to get them back. To cap off the fun, local DJ Prashant Kakad led the wedding in a Bollywood style dance lesson to which it was impossible not to photograph someone with a full grin across their face. It was the perfect kick off to the wedding and left us even more excited for day two.
For their Skamania Lodge wedding, Jeff and Ambar touched everyone with their heartfelt and emotional vows set against the stunning Columbia Gorge at sunset. Ambar’s mom had our hearts from the start, as she was just as funny, sweet and emotional as Ambar throughout the day. Our favorite photobooth, Happymatic, represented once again and with the help of local wedding planning team, Bridal Bliss, the rest of the night was equally fun and even more entertaining than the night before.
