“Hi there! I realize this is far in advance, but I am recently engaged and I am so excited! I found your website years ago and knew it had to be you two for my big day!”
This was the first email we ever received from Katy. And after learning she used to be a photographer herself before switching careers, we knew that this was a couple we were sure to click with. (no pun intended!) And click we did! After meeting Mike and Katy on a rainy day in Portland nearly two years ago, we have since photographed their engagement session and of course most recently, their wedding!
Both times we traveled down to Eugene, where Mike & Katy live, and we couldn’t have been happier to make the trek for this truly endearing couple who kept each other (and us) laughing throughout, what every bride knows, can be a kinda crazy day! Their Tipi Village Retreat wedding was set amongst the woods at a very unique location. Most of the wedding party was staying in the tipis that surrounded the ceremony and reception. To compliment this theme, Katy thought of every detail. For starters, she made over 100 personalized dream catchers that served as place settings for guests as well as party favors! She also hand knitted doilies that adorned the trees and tables. But most impressively, she spent a year knitting the chuppah that her and Mike would stand beneath, as they exchanged vows in their traditional Jewish ceremony. She’s officially the most thoughtful queen of DIY, even gifting us with a dream catcher that had a camera theme!
The reception had every bit of personality as the ceremony. There’s almost too many great moments to describe but definitely a few stand out. In particular, Mike surprised Katy by writing and performing a song…in SPANISH! This kicked off a party under bulb lights and glowing tipi huts. There was an enthusiastic hora dance, an outfit change by Mike and his groomsmen wearing their signature “Chubbies” shorts and yummy late night pizza bites that were accompanied by an ice cream sundae bar. With full hearts and bellies, we happily captured every moment and could not be more excited to bring you a few of our favorites today.
And a special shout out to Katy’s most excellent wedding planner Shelly of Moxie Events, who helped ensure that every single one of these details came together to give Katy the big day she had long dreamed of. We’re so happy we could be there to document it. Mazel tov, Mike & Katy!
That opening wedding portrait in front of the tipi is awesome! Nice work. Beautiful stuff. I’ve never even heard of the Tipi Village Retreat, but what a fun place for a wedding.
